Reflection
When I first joined the International Scholars Program I was at a place in college where I was struggling and didn’t really know what I liked or what I even wanted to do. I jumped from major to major, trying to figure out what suited me, but I just couldn’t pick one that defined me. I’m a person of many hobbies and interests, and there wasn’t just one thing I could land on. I later found the International Scholars Program, which combined all of what I liked. I’ve always loved to travel and experience new things, especially places. I’ve enjoyed learning about history and the evolution of people, places, and things. The International Scholars Program introduced me to a community of people who shared the same interest in learning about culture and history and I knew this program was meant for me.
I remember the first event I attended was actually the ePortfolio showcase. During the event, I got to read through the graduating class’s portfolios and learn about their experiences. I remember being amazed at all their accomplishments. One girl even explained her experience studying abroad in Peru, and I just knew this program was exactly what I was looking for: a gateway to opportunities to learn more through international experiences. I had always wanted to study abroad, but being a transfer student limited my time and financial ability to do so. Thankfully, ISP had opportunities to still gain that international experience virtually. In Spring 2024, I got to participate in a six-week virtual exchange with students from Iraq and Kurdistan. Going into this event, I had no idea what to expect, and I was blown away at how many participants there were. It was amazing being able to communicate with these students across the world, living completely different lives and experiences. Being able to connect with a culture I had never had the opportunity to connect with before really changed my perspective on a lot of things. When learning about their country, laws, and culture, I had the best feeling from the true exchange that was being had. It was exciting to see their interest in our experiences as Americans too. The connections were truly great and like nothing I had ever experienced before.
As I approach graduation and reflect back on my experiences in the program, I feel more open-minded about how I view people, places, and cultures. I feel more inclined to learn and understand rather than stick to my initial assumptions or opinions. It’s such a special thing to truly connect with someone who has had a completely different life and set of norms than you. It makes you more aware of the world around you. It’s also a great feeling to see that person or group of people also enjoy that connection. While being in ISP, I took the risk of stepping out of my comfort zone to learn new things and meet extraordinary people. It wasn’t always easy. At times, I struggled with self doubt on if I belonged in the program, because I never got that study abroad experience that impacted everyone. However, I overcame this by focusing on my growth rather than comparing myself to others. I realized that everyone’s journey in the program is different, and my contributions were special. This change in mindset allowed me to fully engage and be confident in my unique journey.
Looking ahead, I know my experiences in the International Scholars Program will continue to shape me both personally and professionally. Regardless of my career path, I am committed to keeping an open mind and embracing the difference of people and places around me. The program has given me an appreciation for global learning and has inspired me to search for opportunities to engage with the world in meaningful ways. Whether it’s through travel, personal hobbies, or in my profession, I plan to carry the values and lessons I’ve gained from ISP into every aspect of my life!
